Koko clocks in after the fairground has gone home. He is the clown on the graveyard shift, overworked and paid like a joke, and the ghost train will not shut up. Spectres keep coming down the wire at his open car. Company rules are simple. He meets them with the cane. He complains the whole lap. About the hours, about the wage, about having to beat another one back into the dark.

He would swear he hates it. Deep down, the crack of a good strike is the only part of the night that pays him properly. He hides the grin, resets the scowl, and waits for the next. One lap. Three stops. Then the car comes home, and Koko, still annoyed, is already hoping the spectres have learned nothing at all.
